Korea is a country in Asia that is between Japan and China. The country is on a peninsula, which means it is mostly surrounded by water. This means that Korean people like to eat a lot of seafood.

Korea is farther north than Texas, so the weather is usually cooler than it is here. In the winter, they see a lot of snow. There are also a lot of mountains, with springs that give lots of cool, clean water.

After World War II, Korea was divided into 2 countries: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea has a government and economy that is similar to Russia, and South Korea has a government and economy similar to the United States. There was a war between North and South Korea in 1950, and the country has been divided ever since.

The national animal for South Korea is the tiger. Koreans like to eat rice, vegetables, and meats. A long time ago, Marco Polo brought red pepper and garlic to Korea, which means that lots of Korean food is spicy!

Korea is famous for Tae Kwon Do, which is the national sport of Korea. South Korea also hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988.

Today, we discussed what we were going to do to help "better ourselves" this new year. After reading, Squirrel's New Year's Resolution, we pondered the main message:

"Think of a way to improve yourself. Or, a way to use what you're good at to help others."

Trading Card

They may use Picaso, Flickr (if the picture is not copyright protected) or a photo that they have taken, or one taken by an adult. I cannot believe that tomorrow is already Friday. Where has the time gone this week? I crack up at some of the kids who are asking about homework and end up reminding them that this only the 4^th day of school! LOL J So, if they come home and wish to do something extra, have them practice their math facts and read a book for 20 minutes.

Today was a very busy day! First, we dove into preselected books which help guide a discussion on books that are Easy (E), Just Right (JR) and Challenging (CH).

I shared with them a pretty cool APP today. It is called: Book Crawler. Book Crawler is a way to keep track of all the books one has read digitally. It allows for the person to scan in the ISBN bar code. When you do, it automatically comes up with all sorts of data. Then, you can select the toggle switch to say that you own it. You can also place a review on it. There is a “lite” version that is free but only lets you enter up to 20 / 30 books. I paid $1.99 for the full version. It is just a cool way to see how many books one is reading and of what type of genre. We have entered 4 so far – I am in hopes to see how many I actually read this year!

I also introduced Work on Writing with the kids. I did some modeled writing about a pet Tarantula I had that escaped. They even had the chance to see the “molting” of Tommy. Then, we brainstormed an I Can Chart for this time during the Daily 5. Here is what they said:

Word Study:
From time to time, we have different activities that we do to help the children become familiar with their words. One of those things is to sort their words. Each Monday, your child will receive a copy of their words to take home. I will also do my best to email them to you. If I forget, please just remind me! Also attached are various Spelling Activities. Your child may select one of his / her choice to complete as their word study for the evening. I also have placed these words on www.spellingcity.com. You can search for it by teacher… i.e. Theresa Trevino

Reading:
Your child must practice their reading for at least 15 – 20 minutes a night. This includes having them read to you, or you reading to them. The idea is to practice and reflect. Also, double count that towards a popcorn party through the RCE Library Primary Reading Program. I sent home the “Passports” last week. If you can’t find yours, jot it all down and we can submit that! Those will be due October 31st!

Also, for math facts, they can visit my blog and click on any of the links under my voki. They need to at least practice their math facts, as well as read, every night!

Pirate Game

In this game for three players, one student is the leader and the other two are the players. The two players each draw a card and, without looking at it, hold it up to their foreheads so that everyone else can see it. The leader announces the sum of the two cards. Each player must figure out which card is on his or her own forehead.

Second Day of School

We had another wonderful day getting to know our expectations as a second grader. We practiced Reading To Self and made it to 7 minutes. WOO HOO! Remember, our goal is 20! I’m so impressed with their motivation to become successful readers!

I also read to them the next three chapters of Because of Winn Dixie! I believe they are HOOKED!

Lastly, we had conversations of what Scientist do and how they stay safe! We ended our day with a surprise SKYPE session with Mr. Schwab (who happens to be my father). He is a Geologist. J

Welcome - First Day of School

Dear Parents,

Today was just great! We started off the day by playing a name game and by sharing things about ourselves. We also wrote about our family. Most importantly, we spent time establishing routines of the Daily 5 (Reading and Writing Program) and practicing the first part of the program. We created our first chart for:

Ways we choose books…

· Find one that is part of a series;

· By looking at the front cover;

· Making sure it is Just Right for me;

· Personal Connections;

· Genre;

· Books that are also movies;

· Recommended by your teacher / friend;

· Book you have heard out loud;

· By trying the beginning to see if we like it!

To help build our stamina (the maximum goal for this is 20 minutes – which allows for me to pull small groups for guided reading , word study, etc.) for reading, we spent time discussing what it meant to read to just ourselves! Here is what we decided as a class for Working on reading.

· Read anywhere in the room;

I hope your summer is going great! I can't believe that it has gone by SO quickly! I came across this contest in the Houston Chronicle and I wanted to pass it on. It is a Spelling Bee hosted by Macy's.

The local Spelling Bee will take place on August 28 in the Woodlands. I'm not sure how many kids enter - but thought maybe it would be cool to see some Roadrunners on stage! If your child does enter - please let me know! I'd love to come out and show some support! :)

Skype Session w/ Frostwood Elementary

This last week, Mrs. Sally Craddock and myself, conducted a Skype session to allow our children to discuss what they had learned about birds. We broke down the the type of birds that were studied, and then partnered up our kids to talk over the computer. It was very interesting and the kids LOVED doing it! Here is just one of the few things that were discussed:
I would love to continue this with other elementary schools (both in SBISD and across the United States) as it can open a world of 21st century learners participating in collaborative learning! Going Global is COOL!

Fissure on Kīlauea’s east

HAWAI‘I ISLAND, Hawaii — A fissure that opened on Kīlauea’s east rift zone after yesterday’s collapse of the Pu`u `Ō `ō crater floor continues to erupt lava. Activity along the fissure was sporadic overnight and throughout today, with periods of quiet punctuated by episodes of lava spattering up to 25 m (80 ft) high.

The fissure is located west-southwest of Pu`u `Ō `ō in a remote area of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Due to the ongoing volcanic activity, Park closures remain in effect in this area.

Live views of Kīlauea’s fissure eruption are now possible via a Webcam installed by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) this afternoon. The Webcam images, which are updated every five minutes, can be accessed at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/NCcam/.

Measurements made by HVO scientists today show that the Pu`u `Ō `ō crater floor dropped at least 115 m (377 ft) during Saturday’s collapse. The only signs of activity within the crater today were infrequent cascades of rock fragments falling from collapse blocks. This activity is visible when Pu`u `Ō `ō Webcam views, accessible at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/POcam/, are not obscured by volcanic fume.

Lava flows on the pali and coastal plain are still active, but sluggish. Whether these flows are residual lava draining through the tube system or outbreaks that continue to be fed by lava from the east rift zone vent is not yet known. Based on similar events in past years, it will take a day or two to see if the lava supply has been cut off by the uprift fissure eruption.

At Kīlauea’s summit, the lava lake has receded deep within the vent in Halema‘uma‘u Crater and is now barely visible in HVO’s Webcam images (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/HMcam/.) Small collapses of the vent walls occasionally produce dusty-brown plumes that can be seen from Park visitor overlooks.

Earthquakes are occurring at lower rates in the Napau Crater area adjacent to the new fissure eruption and beneath the summit caldera, but seismic tremor is significantly elevated in both areas. Summit deflation continues, but began to slow this afternoon. Deflation of the Pu`u `Ō `ō area has slowed throughout the day.

Daily updates about Kīlauea’s ongoing eruptions, recent images and videos of summit and east rift zone volcanic activity, and data about recent earthquakes are posted on the HVO Web site at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov.

For the past 2 weeks, we have been learning all about shapes. What makes them 2-D verses 3-D has been a hot topic. Today, we constructed a few different 3-D shapes and discussed what a vertex, edge & face was. Here is our chart that we made as a class:

As an extracurricular assignment, have your child watch this video. Then, on a piece of paper, have them write 3 things that they have learned about Pyramids. Then, ask them to tell you the difference between a square pyramid and a triangular pyramid. You can sign their paper stating that they completed this. As an award, have him / her bring the paper back to class in exchange for some tickets!

Mock Rocks

Earth is made of a variety of solids, liquids, and gases. Geologists call the substances earth materials. Each earth material is a nonliving substance that makes up Earth’s interior, surface, or atmosphere. Geologists who study the earth focus their work on the solid materials called rocks. Geologists have discovered many kinds of rock that form Earth’s crust.

Once of the challenges a geologist faces is to determine the ingredients in different kinds of rocks. Many earth materials combine to make rocks, just as you combine the ingredients in a kitchen to make chocolate-chip cookie or raisin bread. Once a geologist knows a rock’s ingredients, he or she can generate ideas about the origins of the rock.

In the field, geologists make careful observations and keep detailed records of the rock’s physical appearance. Color, size, shape, texture and mass are some of the properties the geologist records.

Real rocks are very difficult to take apart. The ROSS program invented softer, more manageable mock rocks to provide a good simulation for the procedures used by geologists.

Some important rock characteristics:

Color: Although often used to identify specimens, color may not always be an accurate property to use for identification.
Hardness: A measure of how easily a rock or mineral can be scratched.
Luster: Characterized by the way light is reflected from the surface of the specimen (shiny to dull.)
Streak: Minerals leave a characteristic streak when rubbed across unglazed porcelain, revealing the color of the power of the mineral.
